Omniflow Deploys One of The Largest Smart Pole Networks, in Vila Franca de Xira

Updated: Oct 21

Renewable-powered smart infrastructure transforms the riverside path into a safer, connected, and sustainable urban space.

In Vila Franca de Xira, Omniflow’s technology is already lighting the future.

Omniflow, a pioneer in sustainable smart urban infrastructure, has provided technology for one of the most extensive smart pole deployments along a 5 km stretch of the riverside path between Alverca and Sobralinho do Passeio. The new units are now operational, combining lighting, connectivity and security in a single renewable-powered solution.

Smart lighting that enhances the urban experience

In partnership with the Vila Franca de Xira Municipal Council, Omniflow has introduced a new model of public infrastructure geared towards smarter, greener and more connected cities. The riverside path Caminho Ribeirinho — a key pedestrian and cycling axis in the municipality — has been equipped with cutting-edge technology that brings together innovation, energy efficiency and comfort for its users.

Technology delivering safety, connectivity and sustainability

A total of 243 Omniled smart luminaires and 6 solar-powered smart benches were installed, forming a connected network of intelligent urban infrastructure.

Each smart pole unit features:

  • Community connectivity: free public Wi-Fi for digital inclusion.

  • Public safety: optical and thermal cameras providing real-time monitoring.

  • Public communication & alert services: audio broadcast for announcements and emergency alerts.

  • Network integration: fiber optic and backhaul for data transfer and system oversight.

  • Sustainability: powered by renewable wind and solar energy, significantly reducing the carbon footprint.

  • Resilience: integrated batteries store the energy generated throughout the day, ensuring continuous and reliable operation, even during power interruptions.

More safety, comfort and efficiency for everyone

The new intelligent system significantly enhances the urban experience: citizens now have access to a safer and more connected path, with efficient lighting and free internet access. For the municipality, the project means lower operational costs, data-driven urban management and a reaffirmed role as a pioneer of sustainable innovation.

Smart Poles that build living urban ecosystems

Omniflow’s smart luminaires are more than just lights — they are active nodes in a living urban ecosystem.

Beyond illumination, they provide digital services and real-time monitoring that benefit both citizens and city authorities, embodying the next generation of smart, people-focused infrastructure.

Security enhanced in a zone under Air Force jurisdiction

Part of the path crosses a restricted area governed by the Portuguese Air Force, requiring heightened attention to security and privacy. For this reason, the network incorporates reinforced thermal-imaging and real-time monitoring features that ensure the protection of restricted zones and users alike.

“Our vision is to build infrastructure that empowers citizens, preserves nature, and enhances safety. Seeing people enjoy this path under sustainable light — and knowing our technology also protects them — is what gives this project meaning.” Pedro Ruão, Omniflow CEO

A project proving large-scale innovation capability

With this initiative, Omniflow demonstrates its ability to deploy large-scale solutions that integrate multiple urban services into a single modular platform. Vila Franca de Xira becomes a practical example of how existing urban furniture can be modernized into digital, sustainable assets designed for the future.

The best way to understand the impact of a project is to see it in action — through the eyes of those who experience it every day.
